10 Kinds of Saree Wearers

From the time I was quite young, as young as 10 years old, I used to enjoy watching women in sarees. Ya, kind of an early bloomer. I used to categorize the women in some loosely defined categories. Here is what I can recollect.

  • The perfect 10s: The saree looks perfect on them, as if the saree-weaver had this woman in mind when he wove the saree. Each fold of the saree enhances their beauty and each thread seems to be happy to hug this women. They also invoke hackneyed poetry like this in onlookers.
  • A-la-Egyptians: They follow the Egyptian mummy wrapping method of wearing a saree. They cover each inch of their body with the saree, very efficiently hiding the gap between the waist and the blouse in miraculous layers of the saree. Makes you wonder if they are wearing one saree or two!
  • De-pleaters: Do you know the law of conservation of pleats? The number of saree pleats (called kuchchiLLu in Telugu) that originate at the waist must be equal to the number of pleats that end up at the feet. The women in this category are in criminal violation of the law. The pleats that start crisply at their waist lose their way around knees and end up in a lump at their feet.
  • Saree-capris wearers: These women's saree does not cover the full length of the leg, leaving a couple of inches of the legs uncovered at the ankles. Inadequate experience, rather than the width of the saree, is the root of the problem. A very bad way to wear a saree, especially if the texture of their legs generally resembles a wool carpet.
  • Luck-pushers: These women do wear the saree well, but somehow forget that their garment is held in place by a puny physical law called friction and that excessive tugging at it will render it out of shape. While wearing the saree they venture into tasks fit only for Romanian gymnasts, such as catching a running bus, moving furniture around and so on. As a result, 15 minutes later, the saree starts to look like it may fall off anytime. (But it never does, so no use following them around)
  • Sideshow artists: Women unknowingly fall into this category if they forget to make sure that the pallu (the lose end of the saree) is covering the side of their left shoulder. Whenever their hand is not parallel to the body, they provide a profile view of the body parts that are generally carefully tucked under the folds.
  • Pincushions: They use excessive number of pins to keep the saree in place and to prevent any accidental revealing of skin. It is a miracle how they manage not to tear the saree every time they move a limb.
  • Googlers: The most recently added category. The women in this category trust the Google-Gods to guide them through the unexplored territory of garment origami. Armed with online tutorials, a lot of imagination and blind faith in themselves, they become their own guinea pigs. These attempts could go either way, but alas, we will only come to know of the successful attempts and they all look stunning.
  • Wrap-duo: This category is not about the style of wearing a saree but about the act of wearing a saree. Some women are skilled enough at the art of saree wrapping that they can manage on their own. Some take a friend into the dressing room to help them wrap the saree. I don’t have any problem with that except that nobody ever asked me to help
  • Navel revealers: A mythical category. Rather, a fleeting category. Some women momentarily fall in this category because of some (fortutious) slip. The the saree gets readjusted faster than you can tell if it is innie or outie. By the way, I refuse to put movie heroines in the category. I should probably invent a new category for them, something like, “This saree must have been super-glued to their bodies to stay in that position.”

  • great analysis
how abt housekeeping contract- their sari & pallus sweep the floor
there is a percentage sari- pallu bunched close together & goes in a straight line diagonally to the shoulder.
neck throttler- the pallu is as close to the neck as possible. & in a crisp straight line

  • You must have women fixation really, why else would you analyse them and their sarees? But in any case, glad to provide you with writing material. So some people even google to find out how to wear a saree huh? You must be surely making up that stuff.

  • wow...nice categorization!!!*clap clap*:) hmn...funnily, tho people hate me in salwaar suits(my frnds don't like me in ethnic wear i.e), I have got the most number of compliments in a saree! not even in a dress! but I think, tho saree is an Indian wear, only a few women have a classy taste in sarees and very few know how to carry a saree well:) and oh, I infact think that when u wear a saree, the navel should be visible! the pleats should satrt from just below the navel! not cover the navel! oopps!! sarees! hehe...I can talk about them for hours!

  • WONDERFUL !! I feel beautiful in a sari no matter what. Wonder what you think of the nine yard version..hmmmm...also how about some pics to go with the categories?

  • you're funny... and smart too (or should I say precocious... SERIOUSLY 10 years old!!!), to have come up with this interesting classification of saree wearer's. Anyway, I hate the saree capris style... it spoils the whole image. And then there are those who wear sneakers with sarees!!! Oh well, it's actually difficult to manage a saree... I've seen very few people who have mastered the art.

Gosh! i am stunned...haha... well, i don t know much abt sarees and i wore sarees only twice in my entire life.. here we can t afford to wear sarees otherwise we will most probably suffer from heat stroke...and the navel revealers, i hate them... i mean especially clothes are for them to be modest and not to be revealed... i still prefer salwar kameez...it solves all the problems! No navel revealing, no pallu,no kuchchillu.... and most importantly no time consuming! haha...and plus no need pins

Add one more, those mature women with sarees with cardigans over it and with socks and chappals at 100F!!:D:D

  • ditto with all the observation comments - damn good!! and glad u appreciate the garment, at least :) the thing about the sari is that you can hide or show whatever you want to. it's fabulous!!
as for me, i've been religiously wearing saris a couple times a year due to festivals and inspite of the pleats issue, am proud to say i can still wear without googling for instructions!!

    no kidding! :D

I honestly feel a little sorry for women who do not appreciate the value of wearing one or even carrying themselves well in one. Sari rocks. Period.

  • Ilaiy's mother and her friend Shanti wrapped me into a saree one evening. I tried to cook, but felt very clumsy (and flammable) while wearing it.

My utmost respect to any woman that manages to function in these beautiful garments.

Seriously TDNA: I challenge you to dress yourself in this garment, and function around the house for an hour.

    Game on, dude.

"I don’t have any problem with that except that nobody ever asked me to help" - ROFL! Such sadness in your life!

By Blogger Anu, at Fri Oct 06, 07:21:00 PM 2006

  • Great blog as always. I love seeing women in sarees as well. I guess I'm partial to the navel-revealers with a short choli. Yes, the movie heroines are amazing (Just glanced at the Priyanka calendar on the wall).

Another great look is a salwar kameez made from a sheer white gauzy material. Usually tight and bunched up at the ankles.

One of the enjoyable aspects of a Bollywood concert is that the majority of the women are in traditional dress. However, most of the gentlemen look like they just got off work from Microsoft.

By Blogger Alan, at Fri Oct 06, 08:01:00 PM 2006

  • You're hysterical. As usual. Does your wife know about your little list? ;-)
    Good thing I didn't even try to see which category I fit in...I'm a non-wearer so it's a non-issue!

  • great blog! i'll stop by again to read more, thanks for stopping by mine! bee

By Blogger Empress Bee (of the high sea), at Sat Oct 07, 04:51:00 AM 2006

  • :-)))) Really funny:-) You started at 10? Wow.. Well, you have master degree in this art now:-))

I am Salwar Kameez person too. I only wore sari once & I think I wore the pallu on opposite shoulder.. That would make that I started wrapping sari from the wrong side even thought hubby helped me, who had always seen women in sari his whole life. So it was his mistake not mine:-) We went to my MIL’s place & she fixed it cuz she was the one who wanted to see me in sariJ We went to dinner, came in the car, changed to my regular cloths & went back breathing finally:-)

So ur wife comes in which category?:-)And do u still observe other girls?(I bet u do cuz Old habits die hard) Very rude;-)

Your list is perceptive, but am surprised that you dont find more navel revealers around.. out here it appears to be the norm!
No one ever asked you to help?? Has you son ever been in a school play as a girl?

lot of ppl find it funny that you started as early as 10. I have the opposite opinion - as late as that??

By Blogger How do we know, at Sat Oct 07, 11:28:00 AM 2006

Next time a 10 year old is looking "innocently" at you, don't completely believe the innocence ;)

    itchingtowrite:
    LOL@house keeping contract :D
percentage sari. Oh my god! That is a brilliant way to put it. Percentage - a line and two dots. Do you mean what I think you meant?
You should do your own list! You have really nice ones yourself.

    Shreemoyee:
"You must have women fixation really"
You sound surprised. May be you missed the part when I mentioned I am a guy.

    Yashita:
"I infact think that when u wear a saree, the navel should be visible"
I am completely with you on that :)

"I have got the most number of compliments in a saree"
Looks like you are one of those few women who have the taste! Congrtulations.

"I can talk about them for hours!"
    Me too ;)

    artnavy:
    "nine yard version"
THe funniest part with that saree is, it's 9 yards of cloth wrapped around your body but still it leave about 4 inches of leg visible :)

"how about some pics to go with the categories?"
If I were in India, I could've walked out and taken pictures of all these people. In the US, people in sarees are a little harder to come by :(

    Shadow in the Moonlight:
    "SERIOUSLY 10 years old!!!"
He he he. Let's just say there is a good explanation for why my school grades are so low

    "sneakers with sarees!!!"
That's a whole blog post right there :) Add payal to the spectacle!

  • my life:
    "i still prefer salwar kameez."
Ya, I can imagine why most women feel salwars are the most comfortable as daily-ware. In any case, worn well, saree is the most elegant garment

    Foodie's Hope:
"Wore saree once in my life during my wedding, never again!!Like to see on others!!"
They must have made you change several times! Also sitting on the floor in a saree wouldn't have been easy if you were wearing for the first time!

LOL@mature women wearing cardigans! I have seen elderly women wearing a sweater and then wearing a saree on top of it :)

    Shilpa:
"the thing about the sari is that you can hide or show whatever you want to"
You nailed it! That's the best part!

    "inspite of the pleats issue"
    Vanishng pleats, eh :)

    rads:
    "Sari rocks. Period"
I am so with you! Sari rocks!

    gnightgirl:
"wrapped me into a saree one evening"
Really! That must be a fun experience! How did you look in it? Any pictures?

"Seriously TDNA: I challenge you to dress yourself in this garment, and function around the house for an hour."
I am already quite challenged in terms of functioning around the house :D

    "Game on, dude."
Ahem... I do have several talents, but drag is probaby not one of them ;)

I am :) Except for the last one. Pillow case? It can be changed? ;)

    Anu:
    "Years of watching (ogling?!) eh?"
I would rather call it a disinterested observation ;)

    Alan:
he he he. You have Priyanka calendar, huh! You really need to start a SEPARATE blog for Bollywood. You know so much more than most of us!

"Usually tight and bunched up at the ankles. "
    You are pretty observant yourself!

I think most of what you described only is only seen in movies!

    OrangeJammies:

She comes under the category, "If you talk about me on the blog, I will starve you for a month."

"And do u still observe other girls?"
I activate my 5th amendment rights not to answer the question.

I wish my cousins felt that way when we were younger. I used to beg them to dress up so I can take pictures. I used to be crazy about model photography and they never helped me out!

I can't be complacent. There is so much to learn ;)

  • Hey TD,

"I think most of what you described only is only seen in movies!"

KYA?! You mean all the girls in Mumbai don't dress like that?

I've thought of doing a separate Bollywood blog. I barely have time to keep up with my regular blog, but I think I'll give it a go. I'm open for ideas for a catchy title.

By Blogger Alan, at Mon Oct 09, 05:21:00 PM 2006

I did only read portions of Katha Ramaneeyam. But I am a big of Mullapudi. And you are right, Bapu is one person who can draw any kind of saree with perfection. He adored the female form and so do I :)

    Alan:
    "KYA?!"
ROFL! You crack me up every time!

"You mean all the girls in Mumbai don't dress like that?"
Hmm... first of all sarees are becoming kind of extinct these days. And girls wearing saree in a sexy way is quite rare.

"I'm open for ideas for a catchy title."
I couldn't come up with any myself :( I will keep thinknig and will let you know

  • hey dude,
mes back....just dropped in to say hi!

By Blogger Ekta, at Wed Oct 11, 12:59:00 AM 2006

  • I rarely opt sarees. Mostly I'll be in Salwar Kameez. But, I love watching others in Sarees. If wore perfectly, it's such a great attire. It's a symbol of dignity too.

By Blogger Kalpana, at Wed Oct 11, 03:23:00 AM 2006

  • Hahaha..good one!
But hey, you try wrapping yourself up in 6-9 yards of material and walking gracefully!
Now do a post about men and their dhotis!

  • Hey TD,

I took your advice and started a dedicated Bollywood blog. It's just the beginning stages, so there is plenty more to add when I get time. I called it Hurray For Bollywood. Not real original, but I was suprised the title was available.

The URL is http://hurrayforbollywood.blogspot.com. You can just go to my regular blog site and click on Rani. (Who wouldn't want to click on Rani!)

  • Alan:
Do you live in Belllevue by any chance? "Bellevue to Bollywood" could be a catchy title :)

    Or, "An American in Bollywood"
Or , "A white-man in Bollywood" and so on..

I think you should stress the fact that you are a non-Indian presentign a unique viewpoint on Bollywood which will be entirely different from viewpoint any Indian can ever present. It makes the blog very interesting!

  • TD,

Thanks for the good advice. I really liked the first title suggestion. I just did a full revamp. The title is Bellevue To Bollywood. The URL is changed as well to http://bellevuetobollywood.blogspot.com. Or as always, you can click on Rani in the main blog. :)

    Hey welcome to the blog.
"i had never wear a saree till date.."
That's so sad! You gotta try it! You will love it. The people who love you will love it!

    Usha:
Glad to see you here. I know you from your blogs and comments on other blogs.

Thank you so much for the compliments. Will try to keep up the quality.

    Lera:
So nice of you to say that. Glad you enjoyed it.

    gauri:
"except perhaps the capris bit I suppose"
    LOL.

Now you are like me too ;) I can't help trying to find a good category for every saree wearing woman I see.

By the way, I am a little confused. You are not the other gauri that left a comment above!? I thought it was you. You don't have a blog?

    Swati:
Thank you... Thank you... Thank you... Thank you... Thank you...

"i am so amazed at ur keen observation!!!"
You didn't start typing "obsession" and change it to "observation" did you? ;)

    Ekta:
Already saw your new post! Glad you are back.

    Kalpana:
"I love watching others in Sarees"
    Me too :)

    Nee:
Man, you are the third request for me to wear a saree. Fortunately it's only 3 requests out of 50 odd comments. So you don't have the quorum Phew.

  • Darn!! I seem to have missed out on a lot of fun while I was away. I am still trying to figure out which category i fall into :-)

By Blogger freespirit, at Wed Oct 11, 11:52:00 PM 2006

  • i have only wear saree in some formal occasions or in some family functions..
so it always depends whats the fashion and how much im comfortable with particular kind of wearing style..

  • nda,

nope, I don't have a blog - in the hope that I soon enjoy the privilege and title of 'The Only Living Person with No Blog'. (looks feasible at this point :-|) But yes, since there's a bunch of us (namesakes) I've been the one who's been calling you 'nda' and signing with a '-g'.

so you like to categorize ppl? How abt my fav. pastime for a future blog entry? As you wait on the airport (and had your share of intel. reading), give names to ppl: 'this one looks like he could be a gopal, she looks like a vaishnavi / mary-sue...

Or for that matter when you see a bunch of shoes in the local store flyer ranging from ridiculously atrocious to genuinely classy
see which hypothetical person might wear them - ramdulare chappals are going to be diff. from pinky/pooja's fancy sandals and jignesh's shiny shoes ;)

Alright, I think this is more than a comment...sorry for taking up space, I'll make up for it by not commenting on the next few entries :-|

  • What should I say...all I could think was which category do I fall....couldn't be too sure..but definitely in a disaster category....I think I should stop there before revealing too much about the Un-Saree side of me

By Blogger dumbdodi, at Wed Oct 18, 10:17:00 AM 2006

  • Its all crap! Indian women go for saree just to wrap around their hanging bellys and fat ass! though slim ladies look hot on 'em.

  • Ah sarees beautiful beautiful sarees - i really dislike capri saree users - they spoil the beauty of the saree n unfortunately over here the culprits are normally the nris n that's how we know they're nris!

Sarees rock - theres no other way of describing it - its definetly a skill to tie it well.

I finally managed to convert a friend who was afraid of the saree - coz ppl never knew how to tie it on her - now shes totally in love with it ;) yayyyyys

oh year ure super observant - n the categories were all correct
